Genre is defined as the type of writing you are composing. The 4 major genres that we were exposed to this semester were the memo, technical description, lab report and engineering proposal with each genre differing in structure, audience, purpose and exigence. For example in our technical description, the structure needed to be concise and clear with sections structured in such a way that would allow the reader to skip parts of your document as they choose if they already had knowledge on the topic or didn’t want to spend time reading the entire description on the specifications of the different components of an item.

If any of the elements discussed above are missing as well as if you stray away from standard document genre conventions it can reduce the credibility of your work and affect the effectiveness of your work. Through completing the numerous genre analysis, and the completion of my own works in this course I greatly improved my understanding of genre from when I had first started this course.
