The audience is defined as the people who are going to read your writing. The audience is important in determining your style of writing and purpose of writing and knowing and narrowing your audience is critical on the success of your writing. Knowing who your targeted audience is allows you to better structure the document and better expressing the purpose of your writing. The audience can be vary in size from 1 person, a group of people, to a entire populace. Understanding the audience allows you to determine how complex or how simple your writing should be, as well as helping determine from what perspective is most appropriate to write in.
In our writing throughout the semester, we created audience profile sheets in order for us to better understand and narrow down our targeted audience. In these audience profile sheets we had to identify the individual or group of people we needed to read our document, their education level, professional experience. expectations for our subject, etc.
Below shows one of the audience profile sheets used in our engineering proposal on David Morrison, the Director of Planning, Building and Environmental Services of Napa County.
